What are Budapest’s thermal baths, and which ones should I visit?

Budapest is renowned for its thermal baths, thanks to the city’s unique location atop a network of natural hot springs. These baths have been an integral part of Hungarian culture for centuries, and no trip to Budapest is complete without experiencing one. The thermal waters are known for their therapeutic properties, and the baths themselves offer a relaxing and rejuvenating experience.

  • Széchenyi Thermal Bath: One of the largest and most popular thermal baths in Europe, Széchenyi is located in City Park and features both indoor and outdoor pools. The outdoor pools are especially beautiful in winter when steam rises from the warm waters while snow falls around you.
  • Gellért Baths: Located in the stunning Gellért Hotel, Gellért Baths is known for its beautiful Art Nouveau architecture and mosaic-tiled pools. It’s one of the most elegant bathhouses in the city.
  • Rudas Baths: For a more traditional experience, head to Rudas Baths, a 16th-century Turkish bath with a distinctive octagonal pool. Rudas also offers rooftop hot tubs with panoramic views of the city.
  • Lukács Baths: Popular with locals, Lukács Baths offers a less touristy experience and is known for its wellness treatments and medical therapies.

Make sure to bring your own towel and flip-flops, though these can often be rented or purchased at the baths. Some baths also have designated men’s or women’s days, so be sure to check the schedule in advance.
