What is the public transportation like in Budapest, and how do I use it?

Budapest has an efficient and extensive public transportation system consisting of buses, trams, trolleybuses, and four metro lines (M1, M2, M3, M4). The metro system is especially useful for getting around the city quickly, while trams, such as the famous Tram 2 along the Danube, offer scenic routes.

You can purchase tickets from vending machines at metro stations, bus and tram stops, or even through the BKK app. A single ticket is valid for one ride, but if you’re planning to travel frequently, consider purchasing a day pass (24-hour, 48-hour, or 72-hour) or a Budapest Travel Card, which offers unlimited rides on all public transport and discounts to various attractions.

Tickets must be validated before boarding by stamping them in the orange machines found at station entrances or on buses and trams. Failure to validate your ticket can result in fines if checked by a ticket inspector. Public transportation runs from around 4:30 AM until 11:30 PM, and after that, night buses are available.
