What is the best way to get around Budapest?

Budapest is a city with an excellent public transportation network that includes metros, buses, trams, and trolleys. The metro system consists of four lines (M1, M2, M3, and M4) that cover most of the city, especially key tourist destinations. The yellow M1 line is the oldest, dating back to 1896, and a ride on this charming old metro is an experience in itself.

For scenic journeys, the tram system, especially tram line 2, offers beautiful views of the Danube River and the stunning architecture along the riverside. Buses and trolleys can get you to areas not covered by the metro or trams.

You can purchase tickets at vending machines found at metro stations, bus stops, or major tram stops. A single ticket is valid for one ride, but if you plan to explore extensively, daily or multi-day passes are more convenient and cost-effective. Keep in mind that tickets need to be validated before each journey.

If you prefer private transport, Bolt and Főtaxi are the most reliable ride-hailing apps in Budapest. Bicycles are another popular option, and the city’s MOL Bubi bike-sharing system is well maintained and affordable for short trips.
